There are 2 ways to approach leveling.  You can level as fast as you can or you can develop certain skills along the way.  Both approaches work.  Either way, you still need to develop your playing skills,and get decent gear once you reach 80.  

In my opinion, you are better off not even thinking about gear or professions or rep until you reach at least 70.  At that point you can be in Northrend and you can develop the skills and professions which will really serve you as an end-game player. Or you can wait till you hit 80.  Either works.
